Portable Legality Formula

Calculating the time at which you will go illegal is very simple and you can use it regardless of what flight you're on and what station you're leaving from!

First, subtract your Scheduled Duty Time from the Maximum Duty Time permitted based up your scheduled Flight time.
(Maximum Duty Time (as per Sec 12.L.2 : 16:00 hrs for scheduled flight time 8:01 or more, 15 hrs for scheduled flight of 8:00 or less).

For example:

FLT 919 LHR-IAD June 27, 2011

Scheduled Duty Time: 10:28 hrs
Scheduled Flight Time: 8:03 hrs; therefore Maximum Duty Time: 16 hrs (15:60 makes it easier to add and subtract)
1560 (16hr maxium converted for ease of arithmatic)
-       1028 (scheduled duty time)
           532
This number represents how much time you have to play with before you go illegal, ie. 5 hours and 32 minutes before you will exceed your 16 hour maximum duty day.

Next,  add that number to the scheduled departure time of the flight:

In the case of our example of FLT 919 on June 27, 2011, the scheduled departure time is 1200, so
         1200
+         532
          1732

You are illegal AFTER 1732!

(In the case of a delayed report time for your original ID, you can use the same formula;  just use the rescheduled flight time, departure time and duty time from the updated ID after the crew desk has updated your original dspid/)

We ask that you follow the guidelines below when going illegal:

  • Call the crew desk
  • Indicate your intention not to waive
  • If not satisfied with the crew desk,  ask to speak to the manager
  • Do not discuss legalities with customer service
  • Do not rely on inflight staff or management to know your legalities
  • Do not walk off the aircraft while passengers are on board

Power of the Pin- Your AFA Pin

Wear your AFA pin every time you fly. This is the most powerful way you can demonstrate your commitment to your flying partners and to management that we are dedicated to achieving an Industry-leading, on time Agreement.
