United's Mailing Sent to Flight Attendants Recalled Effective March 15, 2004:

The Company today announced that they intend to recall up to 600 Flight Attendants from voluntary furlough per Section 21.A.4.c. of the Contract. This is in addition to the approximate 400 Flight Attendants previously scheduled to return on April 1, 2004. The Company explains that the additional recall is in response to an increase in aircraft hours. This is good news for our jobs, yet we recognize this will present unique challenges for our flying partners being recalled and we offer our assistance and understanding during their return to work.
Flight Attendants junior to and including those with system seniority number 18463, with an SW classification seniority date of March 6, 1999, as listed on the system seniority list dated January 14, 2004, are subject to recall from voluntary furlough. This is a permanent recall.
The recall will be conducted in inverse seniority order and will occur in two phases. The most junior 250 Flight Attendants will be recalled effective March 15, 2004, and up to 350 of the remaining Flight Attendants on voluntary furlough will be subject to recall effective April 15, 2004. In accordance with Section 21.A.3.e. of the Contract, all will return to the domiciles from which they were furloughed.
United will send Notification via FedEx no later than January 19, 2004 to those being recalled on March 15, 2004. Notification to the remaining most junior Flight Attendants subject to recall, will begin no later than the week of February 9, 2004, via FedEx.
We encourage all Flight Attendants on voluntary furlough to review the voluntary furlough information package available on our website at www.unitedafa.org and SkyNet.

The Company rejected our request to offer a voluntary recall, but per Section 21.A.3.f. of the Contract, Flight Attendants on furlough have the ability to request a return to work due to hardship, “with the approval of the Company.” We have experienced that the Company criteria for a hardship return generally relates to a life-changing event such as a death or divorce. Due to the recall of Flight Attendants from voluntary furlough, for a short period of time, the Company will also consider a financial hardship as criteria for a return to active status effective April 1, 2004. Requests must include detailed information and supporting documentation regarding a financial hardship that has developed since the start of your current voluntary furlough. Requests should be submitted by 5:00 PM CST, Monday, February 2 through fax to WHQLR Glenn Scoggins at 847 700 7325. It’s very important that you retain a copy of your fax sent confirmation. The Company will advise Flight Attendants of the status of the request after February 15, 2004. Please contact your local AFA Council office for assistance if you believe you would qualify for consideration of a hardship return.
