Remain Attentive To Duty Period And Rest Requirement FARs

December 27, 2004

Important Safety and Scheduling Notice

Particularly in light of the company’s announcement of Critical Coverage and high probability of minimum staffing on flights, Safety, Health & Security Chairperson Valerie Walker, and Central Schedule Committee Chairperson Jeff Heisey, remind all Flight Attendants to remain attentive to Duty Period and Rest Requirement Federal Air Regulations (FARs).

We encourage every Member to be familiar with the FARs associated with the 24-in-7 rest provision and augmented staffing required for duty days in excess of 14 hours to double check for company compliance.

  • The 24-in-7 rest provision requires that a Flight Attendant have 24 hours free from duty within a seven day period. This is important when considering whether you are legal for the Critical Coverage standby period. The FAR would mean that you are not eligible for the standby period if you were on duty for six consecutive days prior to either call date without an intervening 24 hours free from duty.
  • The FAR related to maximum duty time and augmented staffing requires that the FAA minimum of Flight Attendants be increased depending upon the length of duty time. If any Flight Attendant on the crew is working in excess of 14 hours, the FAR requires augmenting the FAA minimum crewmembers by at least one additional Flight Attendant.

Details of these FAR regulations are printed in our FAOM, starting on page 4.20.1.
