Involuntary ANP/Furloughs Recalled

July 25, 2003

The voluntary furlough award process is complete. Voluntary furloughs in increments of 7, 14, 19, 26, 31, and 43 months have been awarded to 5,467 eligible active and inactive Flight Attendants. Due to significant increases in retirements, overall attrition, changes to the aircraft schedule, and revisions to staffing forecasts, the total number of furloughs was reduced from United’s original announced need for 6,246 active and inactive Flight Attendant furloughs. All furlough periods begin August 31, 2003. The company will not impose involuntary furloughs during this process, and all Flight Attendants currently on 5.L. or involuntary furlough status will be recalled effective August 31, 2003.

The most junior voluntary furlough award has a system classification seniority date of May 14, 2001. A total of 116 Flight Attendants currently on voluntary furlough and junior to the most senior voluntary award will be recalled to active status effective August 31, 2003. Section 21.F. of our Contract details the timeline for recall from both voluntary and involuntary furlough status. Section 5.L. of our Contract details the timeline for recall from involuntary ANP status. Recall procedures will be available on our website by next week and mailed from United to the homes of all affected Flight Attendants.

Flight Attendants will receive a voluntary furlough confirmation letter at their permanent address. In the meantime, check the FDMS or FDWH for updated furlough status information.

AFA recognizes and appreciates all Flight Attendants who volunteered for the furlough and saved the job of another Flight Attendant and we welcome the return of all of our most junior Members.
