MEC Letter to Glenn Tilton
March 23, 2004
Glenn F. Tilton
Chairman, President and
Chief Executive Officer
United Airlines
1200 E. Algonquin Road
Elk Grove Township , IL 60007
Dear Glenn:
Since United Airlines informed the Association of Flight Attendants of its plans to impose devastating cuts to retiree medical benefits through Section 1114 of the bankruptcy code, we have expressed concern that management’s short-sighted actions will squander those sacrifices and destroy the working relationship between management and labor. The sacrifices of Flight Attendants active, furloughed and retired are in large part the reason for United Airlines to restructure and succeed in the long-term. We have worked too hard to find ourselves where we are today.
Flight Attendants have always understood that being a part of the solution that assists United in surviving its financial crisis is centra l t o our goal of ensuring that the Flight Attendants’ long-term interests are represented. Through our concessionary negotiations we have given our share of what is necessary for United to emerge from bankruptcy. Clearly modifying retiree medical benefits is not the linchpin to our successful reorganization.
The United Master Executive Council stands together against United’s reprehensible actions that will have devastating effects on the people we represent and have only served to undermine labor peace. Failing an immediate and decisive course of action to abandon this effort the situation will only worsen. Therefore, we once again demand you abandon this ill-conceived plan so that we may all return our focus on rebuilding United Airlines.
Sincerely,
