Retirement and Furlough Numbers

Updated: December 16, 2004
Total Retirements for 2002: 608
Retirements for Jan-Jun 2003: 2,550
Retirements for June 2003 only: 1,737
(2003) Retirements from Voluntary Furlough: 252

NOTE: 225 Flight Attendants returned to work on July 1st from Voluntary Furlough.

United estimates they need a total reduction of approximately 6,246 Flight Attendants, both active and inactive effective August 31, 2003. This high number reflects a reduction from our full system seniority list including all active and inactive Flight Attendants and those on involuntary ANP or furlough status. Previous furlough awards have resulted in the actual number of furloughs being hundreds less than the original announcement.

As with every other furlough, representatives of our AFA Central Schedule Committee will be present for the award process and advocating for the best possible outcome for all of our Members.
