Election Victory: Changing Our World

NOV 5 - We are demanding better opportunities to change our circumstances and improve our lives. Today, we can claim a victory in our quest with the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Flight Attendants made a difference in this election and "pitching in wherever we can" is a concept we must embrace. NOV 5 - On the day after, the leaders of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. stopped short of boasting that all their leafleting, phone banking and door knocking delivered the election to Barack Obama. But the federation's leaders did say that the nation's unions played an important role in his victory and made the difference in several key battleground states, most notably Ohio.

SEP 24 - Today United Airlines signed a Flight Attendant Reciprocal Cabin Seat Agreement with Southwest Airlines effective October 1, 2008. 

Voluntary Furlough Covers All Furloughs

SEP 23 - We are happy to report the Voluntary Furlough award sufficiently covered the 1,550 furloughs required by the company.   There will be no Partnership Program.  All Voluntary Furloughs will begin October 31, 2008. Our Flight Attendant community collectively saved the jobs of our most junior Members and we are grateful to all AFA Members who offered assistance to make this happen.

Voluntary Furlough Bids Closed - Awards Posted 24th

SEP 22 - Voluntary Furlough bids closed this morning at 0800 Chicago Time.  The award process has now begun.  AFA is monitoring the award process and advocating for the best possible results for all Members, including every effort to protect the jobs of our most junior members.  The awards will be announced by 1700 on Wednesday, September 24th.

SEP 8 - Trading of UAL Corp. shares was halted early Monday after an old news item on United Airlines seeking bankruptcy resurfaced on the Web site of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

SEP 8 - Shares of UAL Corporation were halted for trading mid-day today after plunging on an old false headline from the Chicago Tribune that the company was filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. The stock will likely re-gain all the losses after re-opening.

United Airlines Issues Statement - UAUA

SEP 8 - United Airlines today said reports that the company filed for bankruptcy are completely untrue and were caused by the irresponsible posting of a 6-year-old Chicago Tribune article by the Florida Sun Sentinel newspaper website with the date changed.

United to Furlough 1,550 Flight Attendants

AUG 27 - United Airlines said on Wednesday it will furlough 1,550 flight attendants as it reduces its flying this fall.

Furlough and Partnership Program

AUG 27 - As a result of United's decision to reduce its aircraft fleet along with Flight Attendant staffing, the Company today announced a need of approximately 1,550 Flight Attendants on furlough status effective October 31, 2008. As defined in Section 21.A.4.a. of the Agreement, this requires the Company to conduct a bid for Voluntary Furlough and the Partnership Program prior to imposing an involuntary furlough.  

United Announces Furlough Effective October 31

AUG 27 - This morning United management announced plans to furlough 1550 Flight Attendants effective October 31, 2008. In compliance with our Contract, the Foreign Nationals in Singapore and Bangkok have been given notice and will be released no later than October 30, 2008. Our Contract also requires management to first offer the benefits associated with a Voluntary Furlough to offset and potentially eliminate the forcing any AFA Member into an involuntary furlough. Bidding for the Voluntary Furlough will open September 8 and close September 22 at 0800 Central Time. We encourage everyone who can afford to volunteer for a furlough to please do so.

FAA Says Communication Breakdown Delaying Flights

AUG 26 - An electronic communication failure Tuesday at a Federal Aviation Administration facility in Georgia that processes flight plans for the eastern half of the U.S. was causing hundreds of flight delays around the country.
