One-Time Payment Deferral to 401(k)

Written by Admin | Jul 23, 2026 3:13:43 PM

The company announced this week the mechanism by which Flight Attendants will have the opportunity to make an election to defer a percentage of their One-Time Payment to their United Airlines Flight Attendant 401(k) Retirement Plan.

The election period will open at 12:00 AM Central Time on July 27, 2026 and close at 11:59 PM Central Time on August 7, 2026.

The concepts involving retirement saving and tax deferral strategies can be complex. There are a number of limits imposed (employee, employer and combined limits) that can impact how much money you might be allowed to defer based on current deferrals from your wages to your 401(k) account.

It is for this reason, we strongly recommend that you contact your tax professional, Fidelity Investments, Fidelity International (UK), ASC trust (Guam) or a Learn Lux representative (available via Wayfinder on Flying Together) in order to ensure you have the most accurate information you need in making the best selections when deferring any percentage of your One-Time payment into your retirement accounts. Seeking qualified tax assistance for your unique circumstances is the most effective way of making well informed decisions that protect you into the future.

How to make a deferral election starting July 27, 2026:

Making a deferral election is specific to the 401(k) Plan in which you participate. Flight Attendants interested in deferring a percentage of their one time payment should visit their specific 401(k) Plan. Regardless of the 401(k) Plan in which you participate, all Flight Attendants should keep in mind the following as it pertains to 401(k) deferrals:

  • The One-Time payment is not eligible for any employer direct or matching contributions as part of your 401(k) Plan.
  • Your normal contribution rate does not automatically apply to the One-Time Payment deferral choice. If you do not make an election to defer a portion of your One-Time Payment during this window, no deduction will be made to your 401(k) Savings account.
  • Any portion of your One-Time Payment contributed to your account in the 401(k) Savings Plan on a pre-tax basis will defer Federal and most state taxation, but remains subject to Social Security, Medicare and applicable state and local taxes.

With regard to One-Time payments received through the payroll process:

  • In the absence of any deferral into your 401(k) account, your one-time payment will be paid to you via the normal payroll process as required by CBA 2026 no later than September 15, 2026, subject to taxation.
  • Any portion paid directly to you is considered under IRS rules to be a supplemental payment and will be subject to federal income tax withholding as well as Social Security, Medicare and applicable state and local taxes.

We trust you will take advantage of these available resources to secure your retirement future.
