Guatemala City (GUA) Layover Safety

We have been notified that hotel staff are currently distributing a general communication to guests due to recent events in the country. Upon arrival at the hotel, you should receive a letter containing specific safety and security tips.

This notice is being shared as a precautionary measure. There is no indication of an immediate threat, and both AFA Safety, Health & Security and the company are monitoring the situation and actively engaged in ensuring our members’ safety.

As always, we encourage you to remain vigilant and take the following steps during layovers:

  • Follow all recommended preventative measures
  • Strictly follow established protocols for layover safety.
  • Maintain situational awareness
  • Follow guidance from the company, hotel staff, and local authorities, as applicable

If you encounter any problems, feel unsafe, or have concerns during your layover, contact the IFDM and advise your local council immediately for assistance. Be sure to follow up with an IOR and submit a Hotel Report.

Clarification on Regulatory Compliance for Inflight Safety

United Inflight included an article related to responding to passenger call lights in the January 7th Inflight Services Weekly (ISW). This communication stated a requirement to respond to call lights during all phases of flight, without exception.

Clearly, there are periods, including critical phases of flight (such as takeoff and landing), or conditions (such as being instructed to be seated for turbulence), where it is not safe to immediately answer a passenger call light. As safety professionals, we are experienced and know how to manage those instances using CRM and the PA System.

Following the release of the company’s communication, your MEC Safety, Health & Security Committee raised concerns that it did not accurately portray the exceptions and how to respond during various phases and conditions of flight while adhering to company policy and FARs.

Fueled by our feedback, the article on FlyingTogether has been updated.
