AFA Honors October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Share links

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to supporting those affected by and raising awareness for early detection signs of Breast Cancer.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. This year alone, approximately 382,640 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. While much less common, breast cancer also affects men representing approximately 1% of diagnoses. Men are typically diagnosed between 60 and 70 years old.

Cancer can unexpectedly touch anyone’s life, and United offers resources to help raise awareness. COLOR is a cancer survivorship program that provides cancer risk assessments, screenings, and other valuable support at no additional cost. To find out more, please visit color.com/united.

Our Local Membership Engagement Committees will be out walking in the terminals this October to connect with Flight Attendants, share educational resources and support, and distribute AFA Breast Cancer Awareness pins.

Throughout the month of October, we’ll highlight Flight Attendants who have been affected by, or are currently battling this tragic disease. We invite everyone touched by breast cancer to share their story. Your story can inspire others and show them they are not alone. If you would like to participate, please email EngageMembers@unitedafa.org with your story. Please submit your name, base, and whether you wish to remain anonymous. Flight Attendants can include a photo of themselves in their submission.

Cancer of any kind can be a frightening and isolating experience, but know that you do not need to walk alone through this battle. We encourage all Flight Attendants to come together in October to support the fight to end cancer as we know it.
