In July, we observe Disability Pride Month that celebrates disability identity, recognizes disability culture and the passing of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) that was signed into law in July of 1990.
Approximately 1 out of every 6 people across the world live with a disability, whether it is a visible disability, or a non-apparent condition. Disabilities can span across a wide range of conditions. They can be physical, visual, neurological, auditory, respiratory as well as chronic health conditions. Disabilities can also be both temporary or permanent.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a global campaign to help those with non-visible disabilities achieve confidence and support while in public spaces. By wearing a sunflower lanyard, wristband, or badge, it signals to others that they may need extra assistance, patience or time in public areas.
Part of our role as a Flight Attendant is to make sure that all of our passengers feel comfortable and to assist when needed. Whether or not you are at work, if you do see someone wearing a sunflower accessory, that is your indicator that they may have a non-visible disability. For more information, you can go to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower website.
