MEC Benefits Committee

Last week, 45 volunteers from Local Councils across the system successfully completed training sessions conducted over four days led by the MEC Benefits Committee in Chicago.

This training was led by United MEC Benefits Committee Chair, Diane Tucker in coordination with Vice Chairpersons, Sheila Schultz and Jeff Heisey, specializing in Occupational injuries, Insurance and Retirement, respectively.

The training consisted of reviewing the changes brought about by the ratification of our 2026 - 2031 CBA and how some of these changes may affect our Members.

The training was extensive and involved the coordinated efforts of our AFA Staff Attorneys and various MEC Committees including the perspectives and expertise of representatives from our Grievance, Safety, Health & Security & System Board of Adjustment Committees. MEC Officers joined the training at times to share their perspective and provide updates on their continuing efforts in support of the needs of the broader Membership.

The training included the changes to the maximum period of medical leave of absence to provide three years for all Flight Attendants. At the same time, they reviewed how this change also resulted in a change to the maximum period available for benefits for those with less than three years of service such that the maximum period of benefits now equals their length of service with the company at the time the leave begins. Additional changes provide protections to those injured in the line of duty for specific instances not related to an unsafe work practice to ensure one full year of subsidized medical coverage for those having less than three (3) years of service.

Changes to the contract language affecting matching 401(k) contributions were reviewed as part of the overall retirement programs review. Discussions regarding retiree medical and bridge medical coverage were also discussed within the framework of the Sunset clause.

It takes great patience and dedication to navigate the rigorous benefits programs negotiated to support all Members. With the completion of their training, volunteer attendees will be prepared to assist their Local Council Membership at their respective bases; ready for Annual Benefits Enrollment that is scheduled for November 2-13, 2026.

Retirees & Inactive Employees enrollment is scheduled for October 19-30.
