Last week, United MEC Government Affairs conducted their two-day annual training in Washington, D.C. Twenty-one Flight Attendant advocates and Local Council Leadership representing their bases were in attendance.
As part of the training, attendees learned about current legislative priorities, voter registration, how to support Members in the Midterm Elections, FlightPAC, and how to conduct meetings on the Hill to advocate for legislation. The training was joined by CWA for a session on their new training, fighting oligarchy, and the importance of organizing to combat corporate greed. Closing out the day, participants also worked on developing action plans to provide visibility and support in their home bases, connecting more Members with Government Affairs.
On the second day of training, Flight Attendant advocates attended meetings with Members of Congress and their staffers discussing H.R. 4994 Safe Air on Airplanes Act, H.R. 2353 Safer Skies Act, Contract Negotiations, and labor organizing. Over 100 meetings and drop-in appointments were conducted throughout the day seeking support and cosponsors on our legislation.
Advocacy isn't easy. We would like to thank everyone who took the time away from their personal lives and commitments to share their skills and get involved with our Union. With the ever-shifting political landscape, connecting Members with resources they can trust is more important than ever. It takes all of us to protect the contracts we have, elevate our profession in Washington, and pass good aviation legislation that benefits all.
