MEC EAP Committee
Each September, we observe National Recovery Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about substance use and mental health recovery. For Flight Attendants, this observance carries unique importance. Our profession demands resilience, adaptability, and connection with people from all walks of life. Yet behind the smiles, announcements, and service, many in our industry quietly navigate their own recovery journeys.

Why It Matters to Us

  • High-Stress Environment: Irregular schedules, time zone changes, and constant travel can take a toll on mental and emotional health. These stressors can make recovery both more challenging and more critical.
  • Community and Connection: Recovery thrives in supportive communities. As Flight Attendants, we are each other’s safety net, both in the air and on the ground.
  • Breaking Stigma: Acknowledging National Recovery Month is one way to reduce stigma. Speaking openly about recovery helps normalize seeking help.

How We Can Be Mindful This Month

  • Offer Support: If a flying partner shares that they are in recovery, meet them with compassion and respect. Confidentiality and kindness go a long way.
  • Stay Informed: Learn about resources available through AFA’s Employee Assistance Program. You never know when a fellow crewmember might need them. AFA EAP can be reached at 800-424-2406.
  • Practice Self-Care: Mindfulness, rest, and healthy coping strategies are essential for everyone. Caring for yourself makes you better equipped to support safety, security, and others.
  • Celebrate Recovery: Recovery is not only about challenges—it’s about strength, resilience, and hope. Recognize the courage it takes for someone to reach out and continue forward.

A Shared Commitment
National Recovery Month reminds us that recovery is possible, and it is happening every day. This September, let’s commit to awareness, compassion, and celebrating recovery within our profession and beyond.
