Protecting Yourself from Scams

MEC Hotel and Transportation Committee

Occasionally, we receive reports from Flight Attendants who are receiving phone calls to their rooms at layover hotels that seem “off” and have ultimately been identified as scams.

Over the years, scammers have adapted to sneakier ways of getting our information. Unfortunately, whether we are at work or on our personal time, we can be vulnerable to various schemes that can capture our sensitive and private data.

A legitimate hotel front desk will NEVER call your hotel room during a layover to request that you place a credit card on file for your room. If you receive a suspicious call like this, do not share any information over the phone. Hang up immediately and work directly with the hotel's front desk. If credit card information is needed, it should be provided in-person to the front desk only.

In accordance with Section 5.B.4 of our Contract, you are not required to have a Credit Card on file in order to check in and access your room at any contracted hotel. However, the hotel may not allow you to make charges to your room without having a card on file.

Any issues should be reported by filing an official Hotel Report so we may follow up.
