Staying Compliant With United’s Social Media Policy

It is important to become familiar with multiple policies and guidelines to ensure you are in compliance. Specifically, the company’s Working Together Guidelines and Social Media Policy are important to review and understand.

Anything that you post on social media, regardless of whether it is on your personal account, you use an alias, you’re not in uniform, or off duty, is a direct reflection of the airline. You are a part of the company’s image, and it is your responsibility to know that you are representing the airline in accordance with these policies in what you post on social media.

There are multiple aspects of our job that are classified as “Sensitive Security Information” that must not be disclosed to the public, including on social media. Examples of this can be:

  • Pictures and videos while working on the aircraft, including in the cockpit
  • Pictures and videos with company-issued badges, including SIDA badges
  • Screenshots of company policies and CCS

While we understand that many Flight Attendants enjoy sharing their career on social media by posting pictures or vlogging on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms, this comes with a risk that you can be in violation of the Social Media policy. For example, if you post a picture or video of yourself in your uniform but are not in full compliance with the appearance/uniform standards, you would be in violation of the Social Media policy.

It is important to be mindful that once something is posted on social media, it is out there for the entire world to see. You should always be cognizant that anything you share on social media is NEVER truly private and even if you deleted it, someone else may have saved or screenshotted it.

Below are a few suggestions to help protect your privacy and avoid potential disciplinary action issues that could arise:

  • Consider making your profile private and verify what someone not on your friend list could learn about you without your awareness.
  • Keep all your personal details, such as work experience, places lived, contact info, and date of birth, hidden from the public.
  • Monetary gain (for example, influencers) using benefits is prohibited per company policies. Avoid anything that may be seen as a conflict of interest.
  • Secure your settings by requesting permission for tagging on all accounts.
  • Comments on company posts are not private and can identify you as an employee of the company. You will form a nexus when using a hashtag, commenting on a company post, or tagging the company online.
  • Never tag your locations when at layover hotels.
  • Let’s keep our conversations uplifting and respectful. Your voice matters—let’s use it wisely!

As a rule of thumb, if you are not sure if what you want to post on social media is in compliance with United’s Working Together Guidelines and Social Media Policy, then it is best not to post it.
