White Flag Pay Indicator and Eligibility & Clarification

MEC Grievance Committee

Sections 4.B.2 and 4.B.3 in our Contract are provisions that explain White and Purple Flag Pay. It is important to note that during Implementation of the JCBA, the Joint Implementation Team (JIT) reviewed these two Sections and determined it was necessary to be handled as a single process.

The result of that decision was to apply the language of Purple Flag to White Flag trips in that “the flag follows the pairing.” This means any trip that touches open time on a day designated by the company to be White Flag, ends up with the “White Flag” indicator. This can cause confusion because there are circumstances where a trip may have the indicator, but is not actually eligible for White Flag Pay.

Simply put, only trips originally picked up from Open Time are eligible for White Flag Pay.

We have approached the company about improving the programming so that White Flag Pay eligibility is clearly demonstrated. While they work to address the programming, the only way to be certain you’ll receive White Flag Pay is to pick the trip up from Open Time.
